Burglar

How to Reduce the Risk of Burglary

The following practical steps can help reduce the risk of burglary and improve the overall security of your home or business:

  • Join or establish a Neighbourhood Watch or Community Safety Group in your area and display visible signs or stickers to show participation.

  • Ensure all doors, windows, and entry points are fitted with high-quality locks, preferably deadbolts, and make it a habit to use them at all times.

  • Always lock doors and windows when leaving your property, at night, or even when spending time in the yard. Never hide spare keys outside—burglars are familiar with common hiding places.

  • Secure garages, sheds, and storage areas, and lock away tools, ladders, or equipment that could be used to gain access.

  • Install a professionally installed alarm system and consider monitored services through a reputable security provider.

  • Use motion-activated exterior lighting around entrances, pathways, and dark areas of the property.

  • Install door viewers or cameras so you can identify visitors before opening the door.

  • Be cautious with unannounced visitors. If you are unsure of their identity or purpose, do not allow them entry.

  • Trim trees, hedges, and shrubs to eliminate hiding spots near doors and windows.

  • Get to know your neighbours and share contact information to help watch out for each other and report suspicious activity.

  • When away from home, arrange for neighbours to collect mail or deliveries and help make your home appear occupied, such as using lights or parking a vehicle in the driveway.

  • Keep records of valuable items, including serial numbers, and consider marking property where possible.

  • Consider placing warning signs such as “Security System Installed” or “Beware of Dog” where appropriate.

  • Avoid voicemail or answering machine messages that indicate you are away or alone.

  • Report suspicious behaviour to local police. If a crime is in progress or there is immediate danger, call 911.

  • Remember: burglars look for easy opportunities. Paying attention to basic security measures can significantly reduce risk.
